During this time when I was studying and experimenting with different cutlery sets, I happened to receive an invitation to an occasion by happenstance. If I remember correctly, it was a wedding anniversary birthday party. The hosts were quite what can be described as upper-middle class.
When I was heading towards the dinner table, I was suddenly struck with a sense of joy that I couldn’t identify. I understood why the moment I was holding a fork and knife in my hand. Why did it affect me that much? It might sound exaggerating to you, but it happened. The reason behind that was the personalized cutlery set.
Maybe. Also, perhaps it was because the hosts we were visiting had chosen to use such gorgeous pieces, and I felt privileged. I felt grateful. The weight, the feel, the tiny, idiosyncratic inconsistencies in each of the pieces. The individually crafted cutlery set caused me to linger and truly imbibe the meal. I savored every forkful.
Every Piece Is a Bite-Sized Masterpiece: unique pieces
Part of the reason I was so surprised was that I was an art lover. And that is exactly what these sets did to me. The best part about art is the fact that no two pieces of art are alike each one is unique. That is the effect these sets had on me. That is the idea about it. The handle of a fork might be ever so slightly bent, or the edge of a spoon might bear the slightest impression of a hammer. Those are blemishes to some, but to me? That’s soul. That’s the touch of an actual human being not some flawless reproduction from a machine.
Let’s pause and think: we carefully choose everything from plates to napkin rings. then we simply default to a basic cutlery set from the supermarket? Is that not weird?
Feeling the Real Texture: exact opposite
Some cutlery sets are cold and. dead, don’t you think? Hotel flatware, for instance; too shiny, too smooth, too plain. This set is the exact opposite, however. The hand-forged artisan set’s got texture to it. It’s got warmth. It’s got little tiny imperfections that appear intentional. You don’t just eat with it you sense it while eating with it. That makes the meal an entirely different experience.
And wonderfully, the food tastes even better. At least, the experience is richer. More full. Like hearing a record instead of Spotify. Same tune but the experience? Totally different.
Gifting This Set: entire point
I did something very hard for me I bought a set like this as a housewarming present for my brother. In normal times, I keep things like this for myself or give them away only to those I love exceedingly. Two days after I gave it to him, he called and said, “I didn’t know forks could be beautiful.” That made me laugh, but at the same time yes. That is the entire point. I had obtained the effect I was trying to achieve.
If you like tactile design or just want your kitchen a bit more you, listen up treat yourself to a hand-forged artisan set. Start with just a spoon, as I did. Just one spoon. Now my drawer is filled with tiny masterpieces.
Geez? It makes meal time more enjoyable. And isn’t that something we all need?
