I never thought I’d be writing an article on spice bowls. Why? Because, if I’m being honest, you’d likely think, “It’s just a little bowl for paprika or sea salt, right?” Don’t worry, think this way. Although it does look like it’s just a spice holder, it’s actually a piece that can provide your kitchen with some style and function.
When did I come to realize how much of an impact this piece could have? I love visiting weekend markets. I was specifically on the lookout for a silicone spatula for the kitchen when I came across a hand-decorated edge ceramic spice bowl. It completely charmed me. I bought it immediately and shared it on social media. Can you imagine, my kitchen counter now looked like a layout from a magazine. My other spice bowls were outdated, and the scattered spice jars just looked disorganized. That little bowl? It did something to my attitude and outlook right away.
How to Know if a Spice Bowl Is Good Quality: Zest and Attitude
Almost anyone uses the same salt and chili flakes for cooking. When I cook and I require spices and my bowls are beautiful, I reach for them with extra zest. I know this sounds a little sappy or even exaggerated but when something’s both functional and beautiful, it’s worth celebrating.
What Should We Be on the Lookout for?: Balance is
I’ll share with you the things I personally look for, but if you have some other tip, please leave a comment. Maybe you’ve noticed something that I haven’t. We can all learn from each other.
Let’s move on to the subject. A spice bowl must definitely be convenient to use. The design must accommodate easy pinching: shallow enough to easily dip your fingers, but deep enough so cumin does not become airborne. Achieving that balance is extremely significant to me.
Material and Lid: Wooden Bowls
What Material Should the Spice Bowl Be Made Of?: Warm Earthy
If I am feeling like something dense and homemade, I use ceramic spice bowls. If I desire warmth and natural texture, I use wooden bowls. They have a warm, earthy presence. I possess both wooden and ceramic bowls and like switching between them from time to time.
Lid or No Lid: Frequency of Use
Another important question: lid or no lid? This depends on how frequently you use the spice. If it’s something you’ll be using a lot, such as salt, I would suggest a lidless bowl. For less-used spices, such as turmeric, a lidded bowl is preferable.
Color Power: Chef’s Kiss
Color is another thing I notice. I believe you shouldn’t underestimate the power of color either. Let’s use an example. A dark blue bowl on a light marble surface like mine? Chef’s kiss.
Small Size, Big Impact: Smiling At
Transferring spices from rattling plastic containers to nicely decorated bowls is curiously satisfying. It’s like the spices are smiling at me and thanking me for treating them so kindly. These small pleasures can brighten the atmosphere of your kitchen and yours. My one friend complimented my spice arrangement as looking “intentional” (which, in all honesty, it wasn’t but I appreciated her sweetness).
And when you’re cooking for others, having beautiful spice bowls out on the counter helps put things into perspective. It’s a way of saying, “Yes, this kitchen is cozy, but we take care of the details too.”
Spice Bowls I’ve Used Before: So Much
- A ceramic clay bowl that I found at a marketplace imperfectly shaped, but that’s what makes it so charming. I think I love it even more because it is imperfect. Its imperfection is what I connected with.
- Bamboo Bowl Sets: Usually sold in packs of three so convenient to use on a daily basis.
- Itty-tiny speckled stoneware bowls I bought online they look so much more expensive than they actually were.
If you’re looking to give your kitchen a glow-up without spending a fortune, some beautiful spice bowls might be the easiest upgrade. I mean it. They’re practical, they’re chic, and they’re always within reach.
So here’s the real question: What spice are you adding in first?
